How to make easy syn free chips without the need for parboiling
The thought of still having chips when I started my slimming world journey was exciting. I was able to eat chips as free food, didn’t even need to syn them. And still, lose weight following this plan, yes, please
I love chips and I think generally potatoes are a fantastic food source
They are used a lot in my cooking and you will see them pop up in my meals here and on my Instagram
I was initially told to par-boil my potatoes to make chips. I didn’t think it was necessary so I didn’t
Syn Free Chips
Potatoes
So there isn’t a right or wrong potato to use to make your own syn free chips
Personally, I use baking potatoes, mainly because I often have a jacket potato so buy them in bulk so that’s what I have available
Plus I find baking potatoes bigger, so they are less fiddly to peel and chop
Peeling isn’t necessary, keeping the skin on is quite good as the skin has fibre in it which is great for digestion
The only skill required is trying to keep them all a similar size so they cook evenly. If you struggle with chopping them there are lots of gadgets to help you chip your potatoes. I have tried a few in the past but all of them have broken, I just stick to cutting them by hand now
Once you have them chipped give them a rinse with water and pat off the excess.
Transfer them across to a Tupperware pot with a lid. If you don’t have one large enough, a light mixing bowl with some cling film works perfectly well too
Add your low calorie cooking spray oil, I tend to use fry light. Coat your potatoes in the cooking oil, I use the saying ‘squirt til it hurts’ to know how much to put on
I have also found seasoning to be the key way to ensure you have tasty meals
This chips and wedges seasoning from SpiceNtice is my go-to for pretty much any baked or roasted potatoes I make

Add your seasoning and shake your mixtures thoroughly. I mean really give them a good shake to make sure they are all evenly coated
Now you just need to transfer them onto your baking tray and let your oven do all the work
I quite often use grease proof paper when baking mainly for ease of washing up after
Chunky chips will take slightly longer to cook
As a general rule, 35 minutes at 220 degrees should be about right. Checking them nearer the end is always a good idea so they don’t burn
Serve with a protein or speed side or enjoy on their own
Sit down and enjoy them at the table or in front of the TV enjoying your favourite soap opera
