These simple ways to make healthier meals should be an easy way to adapt your current cooking style.
We are usually taught about cooking from home and we tend to follow that style indefinitely. However, over the years there has been a lot more research into our diets and living a healthier lifestyle. With this information, your cooking style could use some adjustments to help you make healthier meals for you and your family.
Whether you are looking to lose weight or just try to have a more balanced diet, these tips will help.
How To Make Healthier Meals
If you follow a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle not all of these tips will be relevant to you.
Eat lean meats
Meat is one of the highest calorie products we consume. Using meats which are lean will not only mean you are eating less calories you will also eat less fat. Meat products like minced meat, are sold in a variety of fat levels which can be as high as 25% fat and also as low as 3% fat.
A lot of meat whether you buy from a supermarket or another source has visible fat. Trim the fat off and dispose of it before you cook it. This also goes for the skin as this also contains huge amounts of fat. If you are roasting your meat, use a roasting rack to ensure whatever fat is in the meat drips off and can be disposed of. When disposing of cooked fat let is cool down and go hard and then put it in your bin. Never tip it down the sink as this can cause blockages.
As meat is a high protein source a lot of us have it in most of our meals. Making this adjustment to the meat prior to cooking will make healthier meals.
Eat low-fat dairy
I am a huge fan of cheese, all types soft and hard. Whenever possible I opt for reduced-fat cheese as you still get the taste but nowhere near as much fat and calories.
Milk is something I drink every day in my hot drinks usually, but also in cooking. Switching full-fat milk to skimmed or semi-skimmed will ensure you are consuming both fewer calories and less fat. This small switch will make almost no difference to taste but a huge difference to how healthy your meal is.
Eat more vegetables
Bulk out your meal with at least a third to half a plate of vegetables.
Vegetables can be cooked in a variety of ways and are by no means boring or tasteless if seasoned. Boiling vegetables can leave them tasting a little bland and a less favoured item on our plates. However, if you try roasting them you will find this to be a much more flavoursome food.
Try some new vegetables and root vegetables especially are a great vegetable to roast. Simply peel and slice and roast on a baking tray.
Seasonal vegetable soups are a fantastic way of consuming more vegetables in our diets. You can make soup with every vegetable, so try your favourites and see what tasty soups you create.
Avoid cooking with oils
So many recipes call for oils to be used to coat our food prior to cooking. This simply is not necessary, especially the lashings of olive oil we are often using. This is all to add a crispy texture to our food.
Try using a spray oil or even a low-fat spray alternative, Fry Light is a favourite of mine. This will dramatically cut the amount of oil you consume.
This is where the popularity of the air fryer has risen from. As it uses little to no oil whatsoever to cook crispy foods.
Use seasonings in your food
Since I started using seasonings more to cook with, I can without hesitation confirm my meals are more delicious.
There are an abundance of herbs and spices available to ensure you are not eating bland, boring food. I wasn’t taught much about seasoning my food with anything other than salt and pepper when I was younger. Since finding a love for cooking and cooking healthy meals, I have a whole pantry shelf full of seasonings.
You can take inspiration from many recipes online or in recipe books. I use a lot of pre-made flavourings from SpiceNTice as they are delicious and very affordable. There is a 20% discount code SYNS20
Wholemeal swaps
I often have rice and pasta with my meals and I also love bread. Making a switch to wholemeal from white will reduce your calorie intake and help keep your cholesterol low.
Carbohydrates are an important part of our meals to help keep us fuller for longer, so this simple swap will have a greater impact on your hunger as well as your health. The high fibre in these types of foods is also an important dietary requirement.
Hopefully, these tips have given you a new direction for making healthier meals. It doesn’t take long for you to notice the health benefits and you will be happy you looked into improving your health.
