High Fibre Diets Explained

How Much Fibre Should You Have?

The daily recommended intake of fibre is 38 grams for men and 25 grams for women.

This recommendation is based on what our bodies can break down as an average.

Everyone is different, as everybody is different, so this is just a guideline. But as it is a guideline after all we should be taking some notice of it.

What Is Fibre?

Fibre is a plant based food commonly known as the roughage in our diets. It is what our bodies can not break down naturally, and it passes through undigested. This is good for our digestive health and our bowels.

There are 2 types of fibre. Soluble, meaning it dissolves in water and insoluble meaning it stays intact. They both are as important to digestive health as each other. Where soluble fibres help our metabolic health and insoluble help with the passing of food waste.

The Benefits of Fibre

There is a strong link associating high fibre diets with a lower risk of having heart disease, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancers.

Fibre helps clear out bacteria in your intestines and your gut.

Helps reduce cholesterol.

It also helps you feel fuller for longer. This is why so many of us enjoy it in our diet as it keeps us from snacking and reaching for the quick-fix snacks between meal times.

High Fibre with Weight Loss

Eating a high fibre diet can help with weight loss as you are hopefully going to be kept fuller for longer. The more fibre you have in your diet, the less likely you are to want to snack in between meals. Snacking for most people is the biggest challenge when trying to lose weight.

However, like all weight loss plans, you still need to be in a calorie deficit for the day to lose weight.

Introducing more high fibre foods to your diet is a good start. Foods such as strawberries, bananas, carrots and broccoli to name a few and highly nutritious as wells as high in fibre.

Excessive amounts of fibre can cause diarrhoea which can be very unpleasant and painful.

So yes high fibre diets can overall help with weight loss, along with other health benefits.

But fibre alone is not the key to losing weight. You should always base your diet plan on a calorie deficit.
